SINFONIETTA'S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MICHAEL BAKRNČEV HAS WORLD PREMIÈRE ON 10 FEBRUARY

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's 2016 Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers Concert on Wednesday 10 February will include four world premières including Michael's Bakrnčev's challenging Sky Jammer.

Asked to write a work related to Cities and City Life, Michael was drawn to consider the ways in which urban development may affect Melbourne and its environment in the future.

As he said, "Melbourne’s population is growing rapidly, and is set to overtake Sydney’s soon, with an estimated 7 million people by 2056. I started to wonder what this would mean for me, my kids, and grandkids. What sort of a place will Melbourne be? What about infrastructure? Pollution? What role will technology play in residential building?"

A bleak picture emerged in Michael's mind, especially if deveopment were to move at its own pace without good planning, forsight and regulation. And chief among all this was the threat posed by a city that continues to build upwards.

"The title of this work – Sky Jammer – reflects on my own attitude towards the massive structures that dominate our cities," Michael explains. "They block our view of the sky, pollute the air and water, and cast shadows on our streets – and in our hearts!"

This work's première, along with those of three other young Australian composers, will take place in the Iwaki Audtorium, Southbank on Wednesday 10 February at 6.30pm. Benjamin Northey will be conducting.

POSITIVE AUDIENCE RESPONSE TO MICHAEL BAKRNČEV'S SKY JAMMER AT MSO CONCERT

Pictured here, our very own Founder and Artistic Director Michael Michael Bakrnčev (second left) whose work Sky Jammer was given its world première at last night's Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers Concert in the Iwaki Auditorium, Southbank, Melbourne.

Other composers on the program were Victorian Samuel Matthew Smith (far left), West Australian Alex Turley (sar right) and the ACT's Sally Greenaway (second right). The orchestra was conducted by Benjamin Northey shown here centre rear.

Congratulations to all the composers, and especially to Michael. We've heard the audience responded enthusiastically. Great for new music, and a feather in the caps of the MSO and Cybec for making this possible.

Up to two of the works will be selected for a second performance in the 2016 Metropolis New Music Festival in May (http://www.mso.com.au/subscription-series/metropolis-new-music-festival/). We hope Michael's Sky Jammer will be one.
